My info is Nomon R. Kennedy Jr. Sgt E-5 Jan. 22, 1968 to Jan 21, 1969. I arrived in Camm Ran Bay 1/22/68 got to Service Battery in Tay Ninh 1/25/1968 Five days in country and TET OFFENSIVE. I was assigned as a Convoy Commander. Given 7 five ton trucks and 14 men.
I hauled just about everthing that got to you guys at the FB's. Food, medicines, clothes, repair & spare parts. Yes we carred those 660lbs pallets of 8" rounds and 175mm rounds and all those powder charges sitting 1 ft behind the driver and his shotgun. ( If mom had known she would have made us stop;) OH YEAH! We sometimes slipped some beer in the drygoods at times.
When the roads got too hot. Like one day in August 68 when we lost 3 men and 2 vehicles going to French Fort. We slung your supplied under any choper available for a while. Chu Chi was another hot trip. Even though Service Battery was on a base camp our losses were from land mines and ambushes. That damn rubber plantation outside Chu Chi was a tough place. Think about six pallets of powder charges per truck and a tracer. Could make for at a minimum some 19 - 20 year old scared shi_less. I know because as a 23 year old E-5, I sure hell was.
Now for today. I have had some tough problems with my year in Viet Nam. I have just recently started talking about it. I have surpressed so much for so long there are alot of things I can't seem to recall. I am embarassed to say I can't remember the names of anyone I served with except the three that was lost in August 68.
I have been married twice. First time for five years 1 son. Second marriage 34 yrs this December with 5 stepchildren. I got close to a dozen grand kids and 1 GG grandson. Gave my heart to Jesus the Christ @ 27 years old. I have been ordained as both a Deacon and Elder in the Presbyterian Church of America. My wife and I both conduct Bible Study in our local jail.
I look forward to hearing from other members of The proud Americans. My email is nomonkennedy@charter.net
